| Layi n me |
I can probably write a book and countless sequels if I have to write about my sister and her out-of-the-world antics. I don’t want to sound touchy-feely and pen down the clichéd crap about sister-sister bond, sister being your BFF, etc, etc. But I miss her. More so because she is pissed with me. Of late she has been little cranky thanks to the hormones puppeteering her. I have done something equally sad to trigger that as well. And that puts me in a reminiscing mode. I can both love her blindly and want to wring her neck at the same time. There are only three other people in this universe who occupy that status in my otherwise apathetic life. Fortunate or unfortunate them...Not sure..!Well that’s another story. But the point of discussion right now is my only elder sister-Layi as I call her.
The vertical vein on her forehead: her alter-ego which pops outs in her moments of ecstasy, bewilderment, agony, hilarity and all those nameless adrenaline rushing moments. During her times of fuming rage, as and when it bulges out, people around her look out for dugouts to escape from the succeeding tremor and eruption. On the contrary, we anticipate the green marvel on her forehead in reaction after cracking a poor joke (well its quite easy to crack her up). Because if it’s MIA, she is not really amused.
Superstition-1. On her way from kitchen to verandah, she will touch the crucial points (how they became crucial only she knows) as if seeking blessings from the positive energy embedded in the lifeless molecules. She seems to have taken the omnipresence of god way too seriously. She will be doing this ritual even when you are waiting outside the house with the engine of your vehicle started, waiting and yelling out for her. According to her, anything can wait but the crucial points, which could bring bad omen if left unheeded. Latest I heard from my BIL, he has allocated some time for this wonderfully weird practice of my sister in their daily schedule because there is no way she is quitting the habit.Superstition-2.A lifeless unused pair of sandals on the floor is also a victim of my sister’s enlightened faith. If bad omens be warded off, the right one should be inches ahead of the left one . My dad often says ‘right is always right’. And my sister is obviously a dad’s girl. Talking about the wonderful influence this footwear arrangement practice can have, my BIL follows it now. She taught it to her in-laws as well. I am waiting for a day when she will probably try to put this into practice in front of a temple where thousands of pairs of footwear will be strewn around. Yeah she stands for world peace:P.
It’s better to stop at Superstition-2.You will lose count if you really start numbering them. She and any three year old can have a very interesting and engaging conversation (not for onlookers) for hours. She blabbers in unknown languages non-stop in her sleep to freak out the person sleeping next to her (which was me in the past and now my BIL).She has an infinitely huge reservoir of that salty stuff in her eyes which obliges happily to our father sneezing, BIL falling sick, some remotely related person’s sob story or even a story of childbirth. Guess that was my tear-void gene blurting out its insecurity of being less feminine. Never mind. Getting back to my sister…People adore her for her naivety and innocence. But don’t get any wrong ideas…She is a woman who does excellent multitasking of managing work and home without putting on airs about it. Well that is enough of blowing my sister’s trumpet. But Trust me I can go on and on if the topic is her idiosyncrasies. After all we were together for 23 odd years...:)A different time zone is not strong enough to drive us apart:)
